Wild Arrival Puppet Parade

Join the Wild Arrivals Puppet Parade and the roving Dixie-land band, Swing Gigilos as they lead us through the Riddiford Gardens to the Lucid DreamBikes Illuminated Bike Parade, gathered on the ANZAC lawn outside the War Memorial Library!

Attend the following workshops to make a mask, puppet, or poi, and then take part in the parade.

Mask making workshops for families

Take inspiration from wild nature, play with colour, patterns and shapes to design your own mask. Bring your mask and join in the fun the Hutt Winter Festival parades. 

All ages, bookings not necessary, just drop in!

Puppet show and workshop

Watch a puppet show, and then learn to make your own puppets for the puppet parade!

The whānau friendly puppet show is about the problems caused by invasive weed species – especially Old Man’s Beard and Japanese HoneySuckle. It’s also the story about a friendship between a Kereru, a child and a Kohekohe tree.

Suitable for parents to attend with their children, 4-10 years, but also enjoyed by children younger and older.

  • Limited to 20 people each

Wing making workshop

Tina Rae Carter

Create some wings with artist Tina Rae Carter to wear at the Hutt Winter Festival. Be part of the puppet parade! Walk the community labyrinth in your faerie wings!

We’ll be using recycled materials and bringing your creations to life with paint or dye.

All ages, families welcome. Please stay to assist very small children. Limit 12 participants

Poi making workshop

Māori Womens Welfare League, Rimutaka Branch

Make your own poi and then learn how to swing it. The poi was traditionally used to increase flexibility and strength in the hands and arms and to improve coordination. It was swung to the rhythmic sounds of nature.

Bring your poi to the parades and swing along to the roving Dixieland band, the Swing Gigilos!

Suitable for all ages, families welcome.
